Cole’s inquisitiveness and comprehension seem to be expanding faster than I was aware. A week ago he said a few things that I wanted to capture.
- “Dad? I know there is outer space, but what comes after outer space? Is there something else or does it just stop?”
- “I came up with a new way to say something. Nobody told me this, I found it in my brain. Instead of right side up, I now say up side up or down side down“.
- After I used the word ethnicity with him, I found myself in a lengthy discussion on ethnicity. Recently (due to MLK day), he learned about civil rights and got some ideas about the “old days”. He was under the impression that in the “old days,” people were discriminated against based on the color of their skin. I had to be honest with him that this discrimination is not just a part of the past. He asked if these were kids or grown-ups. I told him both. His immediate response was: “throw those people in the trash.” I couldn’t help but laugh at his response. Then we got into a discussion about people’s right to their own views . . .
