Um, can I stop you?

I took Cole to a vocal recital on Saturday night.

He had been to one several years before when he was two. My plan was to get there at the last minute and sit in the back — mostly to reduce the time he would have to sit still.

He wanted to get there early and get a good seat.  I realized this too late so we were rushing to get there.

He was urging me to drive fast and to get a good parking place.

I parked in the first available spot — not great, but not so bad.  He was looking for a space with me and it was clearly the best option.  With exasperation, he said,

Dad, why did you park so far away?

This is classic Cole (and maybe classic “kid”): ignore the observed facts and expect your parents to deliver.  I responded,

You saw this was the best spot.  I don’t want to hear that tone from you anymore tonight.

He said, earnestly,

OK.

Dad?  Is it OK if I smirk?

I think I managed to keep my subsequent laughter to myself.
